My blogging has been a little sparse due to some recent big personal changes. I’ll be posting more about that later.
It’s been a great summer filled with unusual, moderate temperatures and cool evenings. That was until recently. The past few weeks have been filled with temperatures in the high 90’s and low 100’s. The biggest victim was my garden which went a little neglected this summer.
I realized as I was surveying my garden that ninety percent of the surviving plants are either purple or orange. It wasn’t intentional. It just happens that a number of last years plants and the ones I grew from seed came up a variation of these two colors. I also have a weakness for purple flowers. I think I did a lot of impulse buying of purple plants this past spring.
I planted many different dahlias but it’s the purple ones that keep blooming. I can’t really complain, I love the deep purple color of these dahlias.
I fell in love with this orange dahlia at Annie’s. I bought it for it’s dramatic black foliage. I can’t help but look at it and think of the San Francisco Giants.
Even my vegetables have been following the color scheme. These purple and cream dragon beans and the eggplants are doing really well.
I’m looking forward to fall and adding some new plants and colors to the garden.
We have had a few days of cooler air down here in south Florida and it has felt wonderful. It sure gets you in the mood to think of fall colors, etc. I really want to add some new stuff…my eggplants are dying out…I have recently lost 4 out of 7…so hope to add some cool weather vegies and pretty plants. Your purples and oranges are all so perfect for the fall. The purple dahlia is gorgeous!!!
Your Marigold picture is a reminder of my quest to find that one special plant that grandma always had in her garden. It seems everytime I look…the plant is either not the right shape, foliage, or smell. Can’t wait to hear about your news. matti
Thanks Matt, these Marigolds reseeded from last year. Last year they were puny little things and not much to look at.
I can’t resist a purple shrub, flower, or veg so this was a thrilling tour! Excited about the new mange tout purple peas in England….
I’m with ya on the purple/orange theme- but I have a bunch of yellow from rudbeckia thrown in too! (need some?) But- I did see a peek of red today starting to show through on my pineapple sages!
Hi Kristi. Love the pictures of your garden. I planted over 30 different colored irises–and also a huge color variety in chrysanthemums, but eventually, the purple, white, and yellow ones are the ones that come up year after year. Someone once explained to me the reason for this, but I’ve long since forgotten it. Anyway, thanks for sharing, and nice meeting a fellow Sacramento Connect blogger.
It’s so nice to meet you Margaret, thanks for stopping by and commenting.
