Christmas for The Dogs

Homemade Dog Bones
The weatherman had been promising me a big storm for this past weekend. But then on Saturday the storm never rolled in and it was just too beautiful to hang out indoors. But on Sunday we finally got some much needed rain, I spent the whole day baking and experimenting with recipes. I even came up with something for our four legged friends. I included mint and parsley to help with their chronic doggy breath. They really enjoyed them and I had all the ingredients in the kitchen. This recipe made a lot but I plan on sharing these as Christmas presents for my friends with dogs. If your just doing this for yourself you might want to consider halving the recipe.

Jack and Maya’s Minty Dog Bones
4 cups of whole wheat flour
1/4 cup corn meal
1/3 cup oil
2 cups of water
2 tablespoons of parsley
2 tablespoons of mint

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl combine the dry ingredients of flour, corn meal, and herbs. Then add water and oil stirring slowly. Knead for about 3-5 minutes. Roll dough to 1/4″ thickness and cut with your choice of cookie cutters. Or twist into candy cane shape. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake for thirty minutes. Makes about 3 dozen.

The dough gets harder to worker with once it’s been sitting out, add more water to make it pliable. Our dogs loved them in fact as I was downloading the pictures one of them snuck into the kitchen and helped herself to half a plate. The mint and the parsley also freshen their breath. I plan on putting them in decorative bags and handing them out to my dog loving family members.
