My List of Fall Vegetables

It’s finally fall and I’m a little behind with planting my crops. I had to say good-by to the tomatoes and squash months ago. However, the peppers, eggplant, and basil are still going strong. Which is why I haven’t had the heart to rip them out and replace them with other plants. I also had a minor set back when we had a late season heat-wave. The heat-wave ruined my seedlings so I had to resow them. I am impatiently waiting for them to get big enough for me to plant. Fortunately, I live in an area with a long growing season so while I’m a little behind some of my friends my plants will still be alright.

Here is a list of the fall and winter vegetables that I have planted so far.

New
Packman broccolli – I resorted to buying seedlings from the nursery since mine didn’t do too well.

Snowball Cauliflower- Given to me by a community garden neighbor.

Romanesco– I am attempting these from seed and I bought seedlings. I love this cross of broccoli and cauliflower.

Sugar Snap Peas– My first batch of peas were destroyed by cut worms. I just bought these seeds today and they are from Botanical Interests.

Curly Dwarf Kale- The picture of this curly kale made me impulsively buy it.

Carnival Blend Carrots– These seeds are from Botanical Interests. After trying purple carrots in the past I couldn’t resist the chance to grow carrots in a rainbow of colors.

Romeo Carrots– These are from Renee’s Garden. This is a round french carrot. Shorter carrots due better in rocky soils so I’m hoping they will grow well at the plot.

Artichoke- I was at the farmers market and a stand was selling good sized artichoke plants for a mere two dollars.

Returning Favorites
Lacinto Kale– I’m growing these from Botanical Interests seeds. I grew it last year for the first time and enjoyed using them in soups.

Wando Peas– These are probably the most successful fall plants I have so far. I even have a few pea pods.

Forellenschluss Lettuce– These seeds are from Baker Creek. It’s also called freckles or trout back due to it’s maroon specks. It’s my absolute favorite to grow. It’s a cross between a butterhead and a romaine lettuce. It was also the last lettuce to bolt.

Merveille des Quatre Saisons Lettuce or Marvel of Four Seasons– My second favorite it’s a gorgeous reddish lettuce.

Mignonette Bronze Lettuce– These are also from Baker Creek.

Mache or Corn lettuce– It’s a nice green that it is initially slow to grow but it adds a nice kick to salads.

Easter Egg Radishes– They come in a variety of colors from purple to white.

Amarillo Carrots– These were an impulse buy from Baker Creek. They produce nice sized yellow carrots.

Tonda Di Parigi Carrot- These are short and round and do best in clay soil. I’m putting these in the community plot due it’s less then porous soil

Cosmic Purple– These seeds are from Botanical Interests. They produce long, thin, delicious purple carrots. They look so pretty in a salad.

Danvers Carrots- These are your standard orange carrots. I sprinkled them in the plot to see how well they would do.

I think that’s what I have so far. Of course I’m the queen of impulse seed purchases at our local hardware store so it’s only a matter of time before I start some more lettuce seeds. What are you growing in your garden this fall?
