Gardening Meme

The nice people at Double Danger have challenged me to a Gardening Meme. I liked everyone else’s responses so I thought I would give a try.

Beans (not sure the name oops)

Describe your gardening style.
I guess I would describe my style as reckless or risky. I like to experiment with difficult seeds and growing methods. I also might test mother nature and start growing things a little too early or little two late.

What was the last plant you bought?
Well, I just bought a little cute Bears Lime tree this weekend (Mojitos!) Before that I bought some herbs because the seedlings were taking forever to grow (Thyme and Oregano).

What were the last seeds you bought?

Wow, I have a seed acquiring addiction. I bought San Marazano tomatoes, Little Marvel Pea Seeds, Utah Celery, micro greens mild mix, two different types of carrots, California Poppy, Columbine, and others.

When was the last time you had to pick the dirt from under your nails?

Well, I am in the process of sowing seeds and introducing larger seedlings to new pots so I’m scrubbing my nails on a nightly basis. But Sunday I potted the lime tree and others so I was especially dirty.

Any big plans for the garden this year?
I really want our garden to be a good resource for food. We are growing more greens, different types of tomatoes, celery, herbs, shallots, onions, garlic, eggplant, peppers, and more.

We also hope to build raised beds and possible improve some unused portions of the yard before we plant our summer crops.

What was has been your biggest mistake in gardening EVER?

Well, like I mentioned before I’m a little haphazard about planting items. We have a long growing season in California and I’m always testing it’s boundaries. I’ve grown cucumbers a little too late in the season and peas a little too early. But I consider it all a learning process. Another mistake I recently made was leaving my poor herbs in their pots making them root bound. I assumed incorrectly that since the herbs take so long to grow from seed that the adult plants would be fine in their small pots. Oops.

Biggest success?

My love of gardening happened when we started using what we grew for food. The first year was tomatoes, spinach, and basil and just using that for salads got me hooked. Summer wouldn’t be the same without fresh cucumbers, tomatoes, and basil. Now I’ve expanded the garden to grow more plants for the other seasons such as eggplant, lettuce, mustards, herbs, peas and beans. I consider having a crop available to eat and share the ultimate success.
Most Awesome Basil ever!

If you could be doing anything right now in regards to gardening… what would it be?

Well, I’d be living in the Mediterranean tending to my massive garden of tomatoes, basil and herbs or maybe the south of France tending to my own vineyard. The possibilities are endless.

I have never really gardened before, but I’m really excited to try to grow food this summer. We are still covered in snow so far, so it’ll be a while still. I can’t wait to see what you do!
