The weather man hasn’t received the message that it’s supposed to be fall out here. It was 78 degrees this weekend and it looks like it will stay that way for a while. I took advantage of the warm weather to plant some more of my winter seedlings, clear out some old summer plants, and dead head those chrysanthemums. I planted my pea plant, lettuce varieties, and spinach. I also have onions and cilantro growing in pots. I’ve added two new additions to my garden plan, carrots and broccoli rabe.
Unfortunately, I had to say farewell to the eggplant and the basil. They were wilting and long over due to join the compost bin. Originally I planned on making and freezing pesto but I didn’t have the right ingredients. So I compromised by chopping up the majority of the basil and freezing it in ice cube trays. This is just an experiment I am trying so it should be interesting to see if it works. I dried the rest of the basil in the oven to be used at a later time. Ironically, the Thai basil is still hanging in there. It’s a favorite of the bees so I would like to keep it going as long as possible.
I tried to dead head the mums the best I could. I ended up with three large bouquets of flowers and yet I still have plenty of them decorating the garden. The red flowers especially are blanketing the ground and have a profuse amount of blooms.
